Species
Whitetail Deer
Rut-driven; moves hardest on a cold front, in the cool. Here’s the behavior the score is built on.
How it behaves
Rut-driven
Front-responsive
Breeze-tolerant
Upland
Cold-weather game. It moves through the cold half of the season, and a hard front only sharpens the movement.
The rut, roughly (corn-belt latitudes)
- Pre-rut (late Oct). Scrapes and rubs open up; bucks range wider.
- Chase phase (early–mid Nov). The best daylight movement of the year.
- Peak breeding (mid Nov). Bucks lock down with does, though big cruisers are still possible.
- Post-rut (late Nov–Dec). Recovery and a hard food focus; late does still pull cruisers.
- Second rut (mid–late Dec). Unbred does and fawn does cycle for a minor bump.
