The whitetail rut is photoperiod-driven, so it lands in roughly the same week every year for a given latitude, largely independent of weather. Here’s how it breaks down for Kentucky, and where we are right now.

  1. Oct 20 – Nov 4

    Pre-rut

    Scrapes and rubs open up and bucks start ranging wider. A great window to hunt sign near food.

  2. Nov 5 – Nov 12

    Chase phase

    The best daylight movement of the year: bucks are on their feet seeking and chasing does. Hunt all day if you can.

  3. Nov 13 – Nov 20

    Peak breeding (lockdown)

    Peak biology, but bucks lock down with does in cover, so daylight movement can actually dip. Big cruisers are still possible.

  4. Nov 21 – Dec 10

    Post-rut

    Recovery and a hard food focus; late-cycling does still pull cruising bucks. Hunt the best food.

  5. Dec 11 – Dec 28

    Second rut

    Unbred does and doe fawns cycle for a minor December bump. Hunt food again, and watch for a lone doe with a buck in tow.

Dates are for Kentucky’s latitude; the rut runs a little later as you go south. The chase phase is the single best week for daylight buck movement, and that’s where the conditions score leans hardest. Layer a cold front on top of the chase and you have the best mornings of the year.
